    The stone rooftops of the Cathedral of Santiago are laid out in a staggered form and they can be visited. They offer spectacular views both of the basilica as of the city of Santiago de Compostela.

    This stone heaven gives us a unique opportunity to understand the church’s different construction stages; to have its towers, domes and pinnacles within touching distance and enjoy the unbeatable perspective of the monumental squares. At an altitude of almost 300 metres, 30 metres above Plaza del Obradoiro and with a 360-degree field of view, your eyes wander over the city roofs and disappear into the surrounding hills in an unforgettable view.

Around it, over the centuries, a city developed together with the Saint James phenomenon and The Way, which has played an important role in the building of the European identity and which has been a World Heritage Site since 1985.

    The Cathedral tribune is the corridor that surrounds the perimeter of the basilica, consisting of a second floor above the side aisles. Its style is Romanesque and has a number of interesting capitals. Visitors can walk around its full length to admire its architecture and enjoy an original view of the Cathedral's interior. The visit also offers a view of other artistic elements, such as the organ case or the top of the main altar's baldachin.

    In the subsoil of the Cathedral, the archaeological excavations carried out during different periods have unearthed many vestiges of the origins of the basilica and of the city. Under the floor an intricate network of necropolis that began in Roman times and lasted until the construction of the Romanesque cathedral can be found, as well as the remains of the early basilicas and part of the first defensive wall around the city of Compostela.

    The Portico of Glory is the western entrance to the Romanesque cathedral. It was designed by the genius of Master Mateo, whose atelier of stonemasons interpreted the passages of the Apocalypse in stone. It is considered a masterpiece of universal art. Visitors may witness the restoration works that are being carried out, sponsored by the Barrié Foundation.

It is also the final destination of all the Ways of St. James, which, during centuries, have brought Christendom’s pilgrims to the apostle’s tomb. And that is not all; it is the starting point for the construction of a monumental city, Santiago de Compostela, that arose in a sacred forest at the End of the World, with the vocation of becoming a Holy City and a World Heritage City.

    Today, with a thousand years of existence experienced at the pace of Compostela’s extraordinary history, the Cathedral reveals itself to be a complex series of spaces covering an area of around 10,000 square metres, capable of rewarding with its powerful spirituality the faith of travellers, and with its beauty visitors from all over the world.

    The Cathedral of Santiago is a sanctuary that is open all year round, from 7:00 am to 8:30 pm.

    • Cathedral Museum hours

    Daily from April to October: 9:00 am to 8:00 pm

    • Guided visits:

    A visit to the history and art of the Cathedral of Santiago through its best works of art. Visitors can journey back in time and discover how from a sepulchre a great cathedral is built. Around it, over the centuries, a city developed together with the Saint James phenomenon and The Way, which has played an important role in the building of the European identity and which has been a World Heritage Site since 1985.
